Licensing of the American Petroleum Institute’s CK-4
and FA-4 heavy duty diesel engine oils – formerly
known as PC11A and B – began on Dec. 1, 2016. The
new categories improve upon the existing standards by
enhancing protection against oil oxidation, safeguarding
against engine wear and protecting against degradation
of low- and high-temperature properties.
The 2017 Fleet Maintenance Oil Study shows that
fleets are becoming increasingly aware of the new diesel
engine oils and are gradually planning to introduce them
into their fleets. Seventy-three percent of respondents
say they are aware that the new CK-4 oil is backward
compatible with API CJ-4 oils. In contrast, only 30
percent of respondents to the previous oil study were
aware that CK-4 is backward compatible.
With the December
2016 introduction
of CK-4 and FA-4
oils, how are you
introducing this
new generation of
oil into your fleet?
most recent study are aware that FA-4 may not be
compatible, compared to the previous study, wherein
only 30 percent of respondents were aware of this.
Education
Study respondents report that a number of
companies have helped them understand the
impact of the introduction of CK-4 and FA-4. The
most common company cited was Shell Rotella (26
percent). Other oil companies that were noted were
Exxon Mobil Delvac (14 percent) and Chevron Delo (12
percent).
Twenty-three percent of study respondents
reported that no company has helped them or, at
the time of the survey, they have not yet received
information on the new diesel engine oils.
The most recent oil study shows that respondents
have a much better understanding of CK-4 and FA-4
than they did in the previous study. As more fleets
begin to use the new oils and see their benefits, it is
expected that there will be improved understanding
and more widespread utilization of CK-4 and FA-4 oils.
