And how can show visitors at this year’s GRAPH EXPO take advantage of the expanding opportunities that it offers? “There are a lot of different ways to defi ne industrial printing, but perhaps the simplest is thinking of it as ‘industrial-strength printing,’ because it’s really about the ability to print on anything,” says Chris Wysong, Senior Product Manager, Wide Format & Finishing Solutions, Ricoh (Booth 2035). “And I mean anything – golf balls, soft drink cozies, glass, surfb oards. Anything. PSPs are learning that these kind of capabilities exist, and now they need to know it’s a lot easier to implement than they may think. Once a shop has embraced this print-onanything mentality, it really opens things up for their creative team, helping them think way outside the box and create eye-catching, differentiating applications.” Industrial print is really an expansion of what we traditionally think of as “print,” notes Reuben James of Racad Tech—developers of Web to Print Solutions: W2P Shop (Booth 1986). “I think it is interesting that the word print is applied to the industrial printing segment because in some cases, there is not necessarily the application of ink on paper,” he notes. “The fact that the term 3D printing is used to create 3D models really opened up a new avenue for printers to pursue. I think by virtue of the word itself, people associate it with printers, and Catch Up with PIA, the Industry’s Constant Advocate Printing Industries of America (PIA) (Booth 1425) is never at rest. The association advocates on behalf of the printing industry before Congress, while also looking to promote workplace practices that lead to its members’ long-term success. Michael Makin, PIA President, took some time to sit down with us and detail what’s happening on the legislative front and some of the association’s efforts to help companies deal with ongoing workforce issues. Show Daily: What is happening on the legislative front that the industry should know about? Michael Makin: Election 2016 is dominating the agenda on Capitol Hill; Congress will only be in session through the end of September and is expected to pass legislation to fund the government and likely punt other controversial issues until a lame-duck session at year’s end.
