How’d They Print That? The GRAPH EXPO 16 Show Daily This year’s GRAPH EXPO 16 “Refresh” theme could not be truer. The premier exposition for the graphic arts communications industry has not only relocated this year to sunny Orlando after many successful years in Chicago, but the GRAPH EXPO 16 Show Daily is using a new printer to produce its 33,000 copies (7,000 on Sunday and Wednesday and 9,500 on Monday and Tuesday), which will be distributed to the expo hall and 30 hotels each morning of the show. For the seventh consecutive year, SouthComm Business Media (Booth 2801), publisher of Printing News, Wide-Format & Signage, and Inkjet’s Age, is producing the Show Daily in a joint effort with GRAPH EXPO’s owner, the Graphic Arts Show Company (GASC) (Booth 700). The Show Daily is published and circulated each day of the event on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, covering that day’s exciting events: presentations, seminars, exhibitor news, special show pavilion spotlights, and products to check out. The 64-page Show Daily will be delivered to hotel doors of attendees before they even wake up and leave for the Orange County Convention Center, giving them a chance to map out their day at the show and read up on all there is to see and do. Now, you may be pondering “how do they do it?” Well, the answer is with a surplus of 40 individuals including a team of editors, designers, production specialists, photographers, IT personnel, sales staff, and a handful of experts at Abbott Communications Group in Maitland, FL, a suburb of Orlando. Each night the team adheres to a tight deadline, as the presses start up at 7 pm, and the fi nished product is delivered by 5 am the next morning. Much of the book (48 pages) will be proofed, printed, folded, and ready to put together ahead of time (approximately 52 hours), with 16 live pages added just as the GRAPH EXPO 16 exhibits close for the night. This year, the Show Daily is printed on a Heidelberg 105 4/C, using Superior Inks and Verso Anthem 70# Gloss Text paper. There, 11 key personnel work tirelessly to print the pages produced by the Show Daily team, including a CSR, prepress operator, platemaker, pressman and helper, cutter operator, folder operator, collator/stitcher/trimmer operator, shipping clerk, and driver. You may notice something protruding from the front page, and we assure you, this is no print shop mishap. The Show Daily offers this special advertising Post-It note supplement for each day of the show, with Canon (Booth 1500) as this year's featured exhibitor. There is no automation for this. Six people will apply the Post-It note as it comes off the stitcher/ trimmer. They will also be counting and boxing issues for each of the delivery runs. The note itself was not printed the night before, but by Flexo-Graphics in Butler, WI. The Show Daily has many venues in which content is pushed, including the print edition, digital edition, daily e-newsletter, and Web pages dedicated to GRAPH EXPO happenings. It is the largest special project that SouthComm’s Graphics Group staff spearheads each year, with nearly 100,000 readers receiving digital news via the Website and e-newsletters in addition to the 33,000 copies at the show location. “The multi-channel Show Daily is a project I am extremely proud to publish with an incredible team of SouthComm professionals and a diverse team of print industry journalists, photographers, and videographers,” notes Kelley Holmes, Group Publisher of Graphics Communications at SouthComm. “When our company took over this project in 2009, it was a print only publication. Today, we have proudly integrated a multi-channel approach to the market which allows us to distribute content in multiple formats worldwide including video, print, and digital editions as well as e-newsletters using the latest technology available in the market including seamless integration between print and online. Since SEO optimization is an important part of the marketing mix, PrintingNews.com aggregates the content and delivers it online with a responsive design format seen by industry professionals on desktops, tablets, and mobile devices through a dedicated GRAPH EXPO channel on PrintingNews. com. The project is completed with our Executive Video Interview series taking place in the Printing News booth (2801). Video is edited and pushed to the market within hours of recording and in time for QR codes to be created for the printed cover of tomorrow’s Show Daily. Our goal with this project is to showcase the latest and greatest technologies in the printing industry.” InfoTrends to Present at GRAPH EXPO Educational Seminar Series InfoTrends is hosting four sessions as part of the GRAPH EXPO 16 seminar program covering the following topics: Direct Mail—More Relevant Than Ever! Sunday, September 25, 3:30 - 5:00 pm, Barb Pellow, Group Director, Room N220E. Today organizations of all sizes see direct mail as an innovative way to attract new customers, increase customer loyalty, and reactivate dormant accounts. Emerging Technology: Inkjet 2016 Style Monday, September 26, 1:30 - 3:00 pm Barb Pellow, Group Director, and Jim Hamilton, Group Director, Room N320A. Growth in the production color inkjet market has surpassed everyone’s expectations since its availability in the mid- 2000s, when it was primarily focused on transaction and direct mail applications. Times have changed, with inkjet printing benefi tting from the increased availability of higher-resolution heads for single-pass printing, coupled with ink chemistry that can address a growing range of substrates—plus the technology is becoming more affordable. Together, these developments make it possible for higher-quality graphics to be produced on substrates ranging from plain papers to machine-coated offset papers. This session will review the latest developments in inkjet and reveal how to harness the opportunity for your business. Growth Market Update: Color Digital Printing for Packaging & Labels, Tuesday, September 27, 8:00 - 9:30 am, Bob Leahey, Associate Director, Room N220E. Only one print application is consistently growing worldwide—with no displacement by electronic media, and a strong tie to consumer purchasing—packaging, and package printing grows along with population. Color digital printing, a small but fast growing part of the package printing market, is welcome for its ability to print short runs easily and even variable data. Here you will learn about the opportunity color digital printing of packaging presents, both now and in the future, in four major print applications: 1) labels, 2) fl exible packaging, 3) folding cartons, and 4) corrugated, you'll also learn about the main suppliers digital printers, also of consumables, and software; why color digital printing continues to gain a role; what companies are dominant now, and others that look to be ascendant; and how commercial printers and other print service providers can participate in a digital print market where $3 billion in print billings in 2015 are expected to top $8 billion in 2020. Xitron Network CTP Interface to be Shown at GRAPH EXPO 16 Xitron (Booth 941) is using GRAPH EXPO 16 as the North American launch venue for two new products. Raster Blaster 4.0, the industry’s fi rst “intelligent” TIFF catcher, will make its debut along with the much-anticipated Xitron network CTP interface, known as B3. “B3 and Raster Blaster 4.0 are next generation products that change the way prepress workfl ows communicate with computer to-plate systems,” says Xitron Product Manager Jeffrey Piestrak. “B3 eliminates the need for a dedicated computer platform to act as a CTP TIFF catcher, localizing the interface directly on the network. Besides saving hundreds of dollars in additional cost, B3 offers complete fl exibility with regard to equipment location in the shop.” Raster Blaster 4.0 is a browser-based window into plate production, providing output control from anywhere on the network as well as through smart phones and tablets. Performance data and media usage are automatically tracked, and operators can export detailed reports with intelligent fi ltering. Raster Blaster 4.0 can be used in conjunction with B3 or with existing Xitron USB interfaces as an upgrade from earlier versions of the software. Xitron has an installed worldwide base of more than 30,000 Navigator RIPs and workfl ows and nearly 5,000 Raster Blaster TIFF Catchers. 62 | September 25, 2016 | GRAPH EXPO 16 Offi cial Show Daily | PrintingNews.com
