2017 STATE OF THE SECURITY INDUSTRY REPORT
Impact of New Video
Compression Technologies
Respondents were asked how much of an impact do you expect newer
video compression technologies, such as H.265, will have on your business.
Business Effect of Video
Compression are Minimal
There is no doubt that new advances
in video compression solutions like
H.265 can provide users and integrators
tangible savings. This is especially
important for security organizations
that have to balance both security with
ROI and TOC. H.265 technology also
allows for higher resolution cameras,
such as 4K, to be deployed where they
previously were cost-prohibitive. Despite
the upside in new compression options,
integrators responding to this survey
have not fully embraced it. Respondents
who were asked how much of an impact
do they expect newer video compression
technologies, such as H.265, will have on
their business said not much. Close to
59% admitted they expect a moderate
bump, while 36% said the impact would
be insignifi cant. Only around 16% would
rate the impact as substantial.
Convenience, Interoperability
Drive EAC
The face of access control has drastically evolved over the
last three decades and in fact, is still morphing. The advent
of the intelligent microchip, wireless, smartphones and the
convergence of network-centric technologies has changed
the approach and implementation of access control forever.
One major systems integrator said the convenience of
using smartphones will soon propel them to become the
standard media for identity management and credentialing,
which will give rise to new subscription-based offerings by
product manufacturers and service providers. Established
protocols like NFC, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi are enabling this
shift, as is the cloud. But the smartphone will also play an
increasingly important role in systems monitoring and
administration. Today we are seeing smartphones routinely
used for remote locking and unlocking of doors, systemwide
threat level escalation, and employee mustering.
The survey asked integrators what access control
technology or service advancements are most important to
their business and more than 48% said that providing clients
more convenient ways to open doors and gates was the
top priority, with devices featuring interoperability based
on open standards as a close second (44%). Implementing
Bluetooth, Smart and NFC technologies ranked third among
40% of the respondents.
