2017 STATE OF THE SECURITY INDUSTRY REPORT
Influence of the Internet of Things
Respondents were asked how your organization will
incorporate the Internet of Things movement
into the mix. They were asked to select all that applied.
Here are their responses in order of priority.

Integrators Offer Traditional Solutions,
New Options
Security experts are in agreement saying that the opportunities
for monetization on the Internet of Security Things are great for all
ecosystem members. However, deployment abilities may not be
readily available, requiring collaboration and project management.
According to a recent Gartners study, the largest device market
in the world will no longer be smartphones. In fact, by 2020, 28.1
billion devices, will offer connectivity and data, from smartphones
and vehicles to embedded microcomputers and security devices,
according to an IDC forecast. This is the Internet of Things. Of the
projected 14 billion devices in use by 2020, cross-industry and vertical
market-specifi c devices for enterprise and small/mid-sized business
are expected to grow to 35% and can no longer be considered only for
use by consumers.
The interesting fact is that business users often consume data from IoT
devices using similar processes as their consumer counterparts.
The responses from our surveyed integrators, however, were
not as embracing. Although 44% admitted they were in the
process of incorporating the IoT movement into their business
strategies, and another 35% plan to incorporate IoT into projects
that deal with building automation, facilities and infrastructure
management options, 29% said IoT was not in their future.
Integrators comments ranged from, “we’re not certain of IoT’s
future in security,” to “we really don’t see a need for it.”
The one argument in favor of IoT’s eventual role in security is it is
likely to follow the same path most consumer-fi rst trends have –
consumer popularity drives eventual business adoption.
